10 Intrinsic Qualities and Traits of a Good Leader

On August 30, 2010, in Articles, by Damien Robinson

There is No “I” in TEAMWORK

In this life, we are tasked with several responsibilities.  Some we own and are solely ours while others we acquire or are chosen by us.   Throughout the course of my career, I’ve had the unique privilege and opportunity to be involved with both large and small teams.  I understand what it means to be on a team and can work collectively to increase productivity, build morale, develop a game plan and meet a predefined target.

Even as a consultant and project manager, a client may hire me to provide my professional expertise, however as with any project, the team, group or organization is ultimately responsible for moving forward based on recommendations, resources, tools and wisdom that is given in order to maintain an effective course of action.

Understanding the context of leadership is a key component in the strategy and planning stages of any team.

So, what is LEADERSHIP?

Wikipedia defines leadership as [the "process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.]

The role of a leader requires a modicum of unselfishness because a certain level of sacrifice has to be made initially and internally.  The choice is up to the leader.  The leader must choose their role be a leader, agree to be dedicated to committing to the continual process cultivating other leaders and come into the realization that they have an objective and goals to fulfill.

So, you believe that you’re a leader? The role of leadership is one that comes with passion, drive and a hard-core desire to really do what it is you believe you are called to do. Leaders are not afraid to work.

According to Billy Hornsby, “Everyone is subordinate to someone—some board, some coach, some law, some other leader.”

What I’ve learned is that without the efforts and cohesive skill-sets of the team as a whole, any plan of action that may be set into play will ultimately not be met.  Any organization without a plan of action will only remain stagnant.

Here are 10 intrinsic qualities and traits of good leaders:

  1. Leadership can be charismatic, transactional or transformational.
  2. Leaders have to learn to lead first by taking charge.
  3. Leaders understand that there are mutually agreed upon objectives and common goals that must be met and facilitate in the process of creating success.
  4. Leaders are not afraid to ask others for help.
  5. A true leader is driven, implored by the vision and completely understands their mission.
  6. Leaders should be able to develop other leaders during their process of leading.
  7. Leadership comes with a natural-born desire to lead.
  8. Sound leadership comes with a genuine dynamic initiative focusing on the end result.
  9. Real leaders create a sound and solid strategy so that those under their managers are cultivated with enthusiam to complete a certain task or goal.
  10. Real leaders know how to lead… and follow.

Additionally, I believe this acrostic haiku does a fantastic job of explaining LEADERSHIP.  Enjoy!

The Smart Marketers Are Engaging NOW

On August 13, 2010, in Articles, Featured Posts, by Damien Robinson

I’m sure you’ll agree… now is the time to extend your market reach! Current marketing trends indicate that the traditional ways of reaching a client or customer base are no longer effective by themselves.

If a business or organization wants to stay competitive, they MUST embrace social networking to stay in step with the rapidly evolving nature of digital communication. Why wait? Simply put, taking action, developing a plan and beginning your internet marketing strategy is imperative.

Based on the latest numbers, there are over 500 million active users using these social networks. The chance to market your business and to compel your message from local to international is NOW.

Okay, I hear you… I have a social media presence, what do I do next?

So, you’re online and enjoying all the sharing, the fun and interesting ways to connect with those who matter? The next step is engagement. Engagement is best accomplished with some type of compelling question or a change of focus. People respond to questions or comment on change. Ultimately, that brings forth action or dialogue on the part of the receiver and that is what you are looking to accomplish.

Social media etiquette dictates that a smart marketer never tries to directly sell their wares. I recall having a social media consultation with a potential client who started a relationship with a candy drop-shipper. She was excited about her new Twitter page she created and was ready to start tweeting to the world. Not that my intention was to be a kill-joy, but I asked her how many followers she had and she said “Oh, only two.” I explained to her that your message only extends as far as your reach. Having two followers is like standing in a subway station with you and two others and then screaming BUY MY CHOCOLATE; those two people are either going to think you’re crazy or ignore the hell out of you.

A more successful approach to online engagement is one that educates the peer group or public about what is trending in your industry, what you have to offer and what common interest you share. That is a far greater attraction. And, it establishes you as an expert in your field. By building this trust factor, your opinions and information become an automatic conversion mechanism for increasing business. Remember, social media networks are comprised of real people interacting with each other and sharing information. Real people, creating real relationships. Most people prefer to do business with people they like and trust. It’s that simple.

Here are some simple rules to use before your business starts to engage in social media

Sharing Brings Me HAPPYness

On January 2, 2010, in Sidebars, by Damien Robinson

Growing up, I always thought that by the time we reached year 2010 that life would be more like The Jetsons or somewhat like Buck Rogers.  You know, very futuristic and one very much like something out of a science fiction movie.  I don’t believe any of us really imagined what it would have felt like to be where we are today.  Well, we’ve finally made it.  It’s now “twenty ten” and there aren’t any maneuvering travel capsules crowding our cities with air traffic.   Gravity still has us on the ground.   We don’t have robotic pets to take care of our every whim and there aren’t space wars in our solar system.  None that we know of, at least.

Instead, in our ‘NOW’ that was once thought of as ‘future’, we have an overload of information:  information at our fingertips, touch screens and voice activation.  The once called “The Information Superhighway”, now known as the World Wide Web, is a tool with applications that bring us an enormous amount of technology available upon a simple command or API call.

With the growth of social media and an increase in digital phatic communication, we have time-consuming, productivity-stealing gadgets while we’re driving and at our business meetings.  Some of us even do it at dinner tables.  It’s a real pet peeve for some that we don’t pay attention to the people we’re with because we’re distracted.  Unless we are sharing with them – (a good friend of mine says) ‘we’re really being rude’.  We’re claiming to be busy, but we’re really distracted from getting real work done.  We are now so laden with technology that we don’t maintain goal-oriented focus and have become drones anxiously awaiting our next @reply or response.  While we have made a significant mark of improvement in the way we communicate with one another, the lack of self discipline and control can only lead to more problems.  We’re removing the human touch by being so-called ‘social’.

Our smart phones, GPS and other mobile devices give us an array of conveniences which were developed to create a more minimalistic work/life balance.  Even though social media is a great tool for communication, improper usage of it can create serious problems for companies, their workforce and their bottom line.

In the last year I’ve enjoyed link-sharing, enlightening articles & blog posts, and best practices.  There have even been some really good drink recipes along the way.  It is said that love makes the world go around.  Well so does sharing.  Sharing brings me HAPPYness and happiness brings contentment.   I have family, friends and colleagues who send positive thoughts, quotes and words of encouragement to help get me through the day – they keep me alive inside.

Those of you how know me know that I like to share things that I find deep and though-provoking.  This year, I plan on being even more of a farmer; planting seeds to grow so that someone else can come along and do the watering while The Creator comes along and provides the LIGHT and sunshine for the growth.

In what ways will you use social media to contribute without distracting this year?

The Ultimate Networking Model

On February 3, 2010, in Featured Posts, by Damien Robinson
Imagine a room full of top echelon business executives, entrepreneurs of varying personality types and businesses, ranking from small companies to large corporations who were seeking new ways of thinking for creating a new networking model in Jacksonville.

Yesterday, I attended a business networking brainstorming session facilitated by my business partner, Sheryl Ross. After 90 minutes of interactive idea sharing, the top three desires for a successful networking model were:

  1. Having a forum for meeting with other Decision-Makers
  2. Making valid connections specific to increasing their bottom line
  3. Building rapport for lasting camaraderie that creates trust and support

What are some things that you look for in a Business networking model?

Social Media Ignorance Isn’t Bliss

On March 2, 2010, in Featured Posts, by Damien Robinson
  • Have you ever had a burning question where you really needed an answer?
  • Have you posted a question in hopes that you’d get an assortment of comments and replies and you receive nothing?

It’s no fun posting an engaging question or sharing a thought and having it go unnoticed with little or no replies.  Isn’t the whole idea of social media about conversation?  There are so many using this new medium as a sharing mechanism.  Yes, it’s cool staying up to date with news articles, cool blog postings, events and the like… but come on people, social media is more than just sharing?  It’s about engaging in real conversation.

Imagine if you were on the subway or on a bus and someone asked you a question.  Would you answer them?

Well, social media is like being in a room full of people and having that same connection.  Just because you have 1,500 friends on Facebook and about 6 or 7 thousand on Twitter doesn’t make you popular.  If someone asks you a question, answer them.  Don’t just ignore them.  It’s quite unpopular when you do… some might even call it “loosing fans.”

What are some things that you’re doing with your social media engagement to prevent your followers from being involved in a popularity contest?

The Philosophy of Three

On March 15, 2010, in Featured Posts, by Damien Robinson

teacher The Philosophy of ThreeThe Techno-geek Master:
And students… What was absolutely perfect yesterday we find to be flawed today.
Therefore we will be switching to another format.

Student:
Now, three months later if we’re lucky, if we’re lucky, if we’re lucky…”The Techno-geek Master” wills say:
TODAY due to unforseen minor flaws in the new system we will be returning to the old one that was absolutely perfect at one time; and we will await the next episode when that absolutely perfect system will become absolutely flawed again.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the student is a relatively flexible indivual, however, the level of anxiety in regard to the technological changes is probably larger than the country of Australia.
So one can imagine that there might be a modicum of frustration associated with the advent of yet a new technology above three (3).

Google Tests Your Site Speed for Better Search Ranking

On April 10, 2010, in Sidebars, by Damien Robinson

Did you know: How fast your website loads is now is counts as a factor for SEO ranking in Google?  Google made an official announcement yesterday.  This changes the game quite a bit  folks.

Well, what does that mean, you ask:  (1) If you use server-side technologies such as API tools or databases you may want to do some server load testing and (2) if you use heavy graphics and flash, well it’s time to reconsider your code.   Though, it’s only just one factor in determining your website’s ranking, having relevant content on your site still leads for proper SEO.  Oh yeah… and don’t just update your code just because you are trying to get better search rankings.
